Curriculum Information

Here at Westlands our curriculum is designed to provide all pupils with a structured and clear path to success. In years 7 and 8 pupils study a wide range of subjects, including the core foundation of English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, PE and Values. All of the subjects follow a flight path of learning that provides a foundation for the level 2 courses they will study at key stage 4 level.

All pupils go through the options process at the end of key stage 3 in order to choose an individual set of subjects to focus on in year 9, 10 and 11. We currently offer 2 pathways. Some academically able pupils have the option to begin an English Baccalaureate pathway in Year 9 and are able to specialise in either history or geography and French through to Year 11. All pupils will have the option to select from a wide range of additional option subjects which include GCSE courses, new generation BTEC’s and some other level 2 vocational qualifications. More details on these can be found in the latest options booklet which is available from this section of the website.

Although we offer a vast range of subjects we consider English, mathematics and science as the highest priority subjects in our curriculum. Particularly at Key Stage 4 extra resources are given to these subjects to enable teachers to enhance the pupil’s success in achieving their full potential. This also allows us to provide pupils with extra intervention if required. Early intervention is key and pupils are provided with a number of mock examinations in order to improve their exam skills and identify strengths and weaknesses throughout key stage 4.

Ks4 Results at Westlands are consistently good and the school has shown a long trend of improvement over the past 25 Years. Pupils make excellent progress from year 7 to year 11 here and we believe our results reflect the fact that our curriculum concentrates on the basics, but caters for all pupils, whatever their ability, so that they remain motivated to do well.

More information about the curriculum can be found on the individual department pages located in the 'Curriculum' tab.
