Course Overview

Students will gain knowledge and understanding of businesses in different contexts ranging from small enterprises to large multinationals and businesses operating in local, national and global contexts. Students will develop an understanding of how these contexts impact on business behaviour.

Students will apply the following knowledge and understanding of a business. This will include:

  • The interdependent nature of business aims and their activities, performance related measures, understanding the characteristics of success, business influences, finance and marketing products.
  • How different business contexts affect business decisions and success.
  • Understand financial measures companies take to ensure that they are successful.
  • How marketing can be used to ensure product success.

Assessment:

Unit 1: Introduction to a Business

  • How businesses operate.
  • Consider how market research helps a business to understand the market.
  • Investigate using the marketing mix and key performance indicators.

Internal Assessment: 25% of overall grade.
 

Unit 2: Finance for Business

  • Understand the costs involved in business and how businesses make a profit.
  • Understand how businesses plan for success.
  • Understand how businesses measure successes and identify areas for improvement.

Online exam: 1 hour.   90 marks. 25% of overall grade.
 

Unit 3: Introduction to a Business

  • Know how trends and the current business environment may impact on a business.
  • Plan an idea for a new business.
  • Present a business model for a business start-up.

Internal Assessment: 25% of overall grade
 

Unit 4: Promoting a Brand

  • Explore the use of branding and the promotional mix in business.
  • Develop and promote a brand for a business.

Internal Assessment: 25% of overall grade.

GCSE in Business

Course Overview

Students apply their knowledge and understanding to different business contexts ranging from small enterprises to large multinationals and businesses operating in local, national and global contexts. Students will develop an understanding of how these contexts impact on business behaviour.

Students will apply their knowledge and understanding to business decision making including:

  • the interdependent nature of business activity, influences on business, business operations, finance, marketing and human resources, and how these interdependencies underpin business decision making.
  • how different business contexts affect business decisions.
  • the use and limitation of quantitative and qualitative data in making business decisions.

Term 1: Introduction to business, understanding different business and how they operate.
Term 2: Business ownership, understanding how different businesses are owned.
Term 3: Understand the different purposes of a business, looking at profit and not for profit organisations.
Term 4: SMART targets and how companies can use them to monitor success.
Term 5: How Key Performance Indicators can enhance the performance of a business and lead them to success.
Term 6: Demonstrating skills learnt this year by introducing and running a business set up by the students. 

 

Year 10

Term 1: Introduction to business, understanding how two specific businesses operate and how they are owned.
Term 2: Investigating the different purposes of a business, looking at profit and not for profit organisations and understanding the differences and similarities between them.
Term 3: Looking at the different ways companies judge success including using targets and Key Performance Indicators.
Term 4: The impact market research can have on companies in different sectors.
Term 5: Introduction into Finance, using different formulas.
Term 6: Understanding the purpose of financial documents and why businesses use them.

 

Year 11

Term 1: Marketing - understanding market research, market segmentation and how they can impact the sales of products.
Term 2: Business ownership - the different ways businesses are owned and who is responsible for them.
Term 3: Finance - understanding the reason for different financial documents and how to perform calculations.
Term 4: Exam skills and techniques.
Term 5: Whole course revision in preparation for the GCSE examination.
Term 6: Whole course revision in preparation for the GCSE examination.


 

Sixth Form Provision 

Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Business

Level : 3

Course Overview

The Extended Certificate is for learners who are interested in learning about the business sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in business-related subjects.

Unit 1: Exploring Business. In this introductory unit, learners study the purposes of different businesses, their structure, the effect of the external environment, and how they need to be dynamic and innovative to survive.

Unit 2: Developing a Marketing Campaign. Learners will gain skills relating to, and an understanding of, how a marketing campaign is developed.

Unit 3: Personal and Business Finance. Learners study the purpose and importance of personal and business finance. They will develop the skills and knowledge needed to understand, analyse and prepare financial information. Written examination set by Pearson.

2 hours. 100 marks.

Unit 8: Recruitment and Selection Process. Learners explore how the recruitment process is carried out in a business. The unit gives learners the opportunity to participate in selection interviews and review their performance.
