Course Overview

Students develop the ability to design and make products with creativity and originality, using a range of materials and techniques.  Pupils will study for an external exam and for a Non-Examined Assessment.

Assessment: 50% examination, 50% controlled assessment.

 

Vocational Award in Engineering

Course Overview

The WJEC Vocational Award in Engineering provides a practical, real-world approach to learning and develop specific knowledge and skills students need to work successfully in the engineering industry.

Pupils will study the following units:

  • Unit One – Engineering Design
  • Unit Two – Producing Engineering Products
  • Unit Three – Solving Engineering Problems

Assessment: 40% Examination, 60% Coursework

 

BTEC First Award in Engineering (Year 11 ONLY)

Course Overview

The BTEC First Award in Engineering provides a practical, real-world approach to learning and develop specific knowledge and skills students need to work successfully in the engineering industry.

Pupils will study the following units:

  • Unit One: The Engineered World
  • Unit Two: Investigating an Engineered Product
  • Unit Three: Health & Safety in the Engineering Workplace
  • Unit Five:  Engineering Materials

Assessment: 25% examination, 75% coursework.

Technical Level in Engineering Design

Exam Board: AQA
Level: 3

Course Overview

The AQA Tech Level in Engineering will allow learners the opportunity to learn and understand the core principles and technologies that underpin modern engineering. It will provide them with opportunities to develop sound practical engineering investigation, design, construction, and testing skills which are critical to being a good technician and/or Incorporated Engineer.

This qualification will provide the core technical knowledge required for preparing to work in the engineering industry and reflects the nature of modern engineering. This includes:

  • Analytical and scientific methods for engineers
  • Mechanical, electrical, electronic and digital principles and applications
  • Applications of pneumatics and hydraulics
  • Health, safety and risk assessment in engineering
  • Plant and process principles and applications.

Assessment: 75% internally assessed coursework, 25% examination.

 

Light Vehicle Maintenence and Repair

Exam Board: IMI
Level: 2

Course Overview

This qualification is for pupils wanting to develop some of the key sills and understanding in motor vehicle systems. Pupils will develop basic skills needed to apply for an automotive apprenticeship or similar pathway into a career in the automotive industry. This includes:

  • Skills in routine light vehicle maintenance
  • Skills in health, safety and good house keeping
  • Skills in supporting job roles in the automotive industry
  • Skills in materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used in the automotive environment

 

Curriculum Content

Year 7 Design and Technology (Pupils complete 9 week projects on a Carousel)

Term 1-6: Photo frame/Maze game – Designing for a client, development drawing, types of woods and plastics, forming processes, practical skills, testing and evaluation.
 

Year 8 Design and Technology (Pupils complete 9 week projects on a Carousel)

Term 1-6: Angle Poise Lamp/Mechanical Toy/Pinball – Designing for a client, Design Development drawing and modelling, Types of woods and Metals, Practical skills, testing and evaluation.
 

Year 9 (WJEC Engineering)

Term 1: Engineering Design - Investigation - Target Market Research, Existing Product Analysis, Design Brief and Specification~
Term 2: Engineering Design - Design Skills - Creative design skills, engineering drawing, CAD/CAM
Term 3: Engineering Design - Presenting Information and ideas, evaluation
Term 4-6: Unit 1Controlled Assessment
 

Year 9 (GCSE Design Technology)

Term 1-2: Project one: Sport and Leisure: Design and make a creative solution to improve an individual or group sport or activity.
Term 3: Electrical Systems
Term 4-5: Project Two -Improving the daily life of the elderly: Look at specific needs of elderly people and design a unique product that would support their everyday lives.

Term 6: Mechanical Systems - Analyse the function of mechanical products which have pulley systems, gear systems, levers and linkages, rack and pinion, cams.

Year 10 (GCSE Design Technology)

Term 1-2: Project one: Sport and Leisure: Design and make a creative solution to improve an individual or group sport or activity.
