Course Overview
The AQA Tech Level in Engineering will allow learners the opportunity to learn and understand the core principles and technologies that underpin modern engineering. It will provide them with opportunities to develop sound practical engineering investigation, design, construction, and testing skills which are critical to being a good technician and/or Incorporated Engineer.
This qualification will provide the core technical knowledge required for preparing to work in the engineering industry and reflects the nature of modern engineering. This includes:
Assessment: 75% internally assessed coursework, 25% examination.
Year 7 Design and Technology (Pupils complete three projects on a carousel)
Rotation One: Maze Game
Pupils learn some basic workshop skills whilst manufacturing a maze game.
Rotation Two: Design Skills Portfolio
Pupils learn about some of the essential skills of a designer including product analysis and creative design. This year's brief will focus on designing a new Olympic torch for the upcoming Olympic Games.
Rotation Three: Photo Frame
Pupils will continue to develop and refine practical skills during this project.
Year 8 Design and Technology (Pupils complete three projects on a carousel)
Rotation One: Angle Poise Lamp
Pupils learn some basic workshop skills whilst manufacturing an angle poise lamp.
Rotation Two: Design Skills Portfolio
Pupils learn about some of the essential skills of a designer including product analysis and creative design. This year's brief will focus on designing a new Olympic torch for the upcoming Olympic Games.
Rotation Three: Desk Fan
Pupils will continue to develop and refine practical skills during this project.
Year 9 (WJEC Engineering)
Term 1: Engineering Design - Investigation - Target market research, existing product analysis, design brief and specification.
Term 2: Engineering Design - Design Skills - Creative design skills, engineering drawing, CAD/CAM.
Term 3: Engineering Design - Presenting information and ideas, evaluation.
Term 4-6: Unit 3: Solving Engineering Problems examination preparation.
Year 9 (GCSE Design Technology)
Term 1-2: Project One: Sport and Leisure: Design and make a creative solution to improve an individual or group sport or activity.
Term 3: Electrical Systems.
Term 4-5: Project Two - Improving the daily life of the elderly: Look at specific needs of elderly people and design a unique product that would support their everyday lives.
Term 6: Mechanical Systems - Analyse the function of mechanical products which have pulley systems, gear systems, levers and linkages, rack and pinion, cams.
