Course Overview

The Level 1/2 Technical Award in Health and Social Care is designed for learners who want an introduction to health and social care that includes a vocational and project-based element. The qualification will appeal to learners who wish to pursue a career in the health and social care sector or progress onto further study.


Assessment:

The qualification has 2 assessments externally-set by NCFE: one non-exam assessment and one written examined assessment.

• 13 hours non-exam assessment - This is externally-set, internally marked and externally moderated:  synoptic project that is completed in controlled conditions  (50% of the final grade)

• 1 hour 30 minutes examined assessment - This is externally-set and externally marked,  written exam (50% of the final grade)

Course Overview

This qualification prepares learners to work in either the health or social care sector, looking at the stages of lifespan through to later adulthood and the sociological and psychological theories that underpin human development. Students will explore concepts involved in working practices including reflective practice, equality and inclusion, safeguarding, communication methods and infection prevention.

The course has 75 hours of real work environment experience that will be assessed through placement hours and observations. 

Assessment: 

Portfolio of evidence –  Each unit is graded A*-D. These are internally assessed.

20 hour controlled synoptic assessment.  This is externally set and externally assessed. These contribute 30.8% towards the final qualification grade for the certificate.

Year 11

Term 1:

  • Partnership working.

  • The care planning cycle.

Term 3:

  • Controlled assessment practice.

  • Controlled assessment.

Year 12 - Technical Certificate in Health and Social Care

HSC CM1- Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care

  • investigate equality, diversity and rights in health and social care and how to implement inclusive practice.
  • Explore  legislations and codes of practice in relation to inclusive practice in health and social care settings and the role of the practitioner within these guidelines.

 HSC CM2: Human growth and development

  • Research the key elements of development across human lifespan and apply the development theories to the areas of development.
  • Explore events, both expected and unexpected that can impact the development of the individual.

 HSC CM3: Safeguarding in health and social care

  • Explore what safeguarding is and how to safeguard individuals in relation to legislation, policies and procedures, the practitioners responsibility to maintain the client’s safety and  in reporting concerns.
  • Research factors that may contribute to an individual being vulnerable to harm or abuse and the signs and symptoms that may be an indicator of abuse.

Year 13 - Technical Certificate in Health and Social Care

HSC CM4: Communication in health and social care

  • Explore effective communication and the communication channels in health and social care settings.
  • Research legislation, policies, procedures and codes of practice relating to information management applying them to working practice

HSC CM5: Infection prevention and control in health and social care

  • Explore biological and vector bourne diseases and how they are transmitted . Demonstrating ways to control and prevent the spread of illness and infection in health and social care settings.

HSC CM6: Psychological perspectives in health and social care

  • Investigate the concepts in the nature nurture debate.
  • Explore psychological approaches in relation to a mental  and physical health condition.

HSC CM7: Sociological perspectives in health and social care

  • Explore sociological perspectives in relation to health and social care.
  • Investigate social patterns and trends of health and illness in the population.

HSC CM8: Working in health and social care

  • Research legislation, policies, procedures, professional standards and codes of practice. in relation to health and social care.
  • Explore the functions of health and social care provision,  factors which influence service delivery and the roles and responsibilities of the service providers.

HSC CM9: Reflective practice

  • Reflect on your own practice and identify your own areas of improvement,  consider the importance of professional development now and in the future.
  • Investigate how the health and social care practitioner’s own values, beliefs and experiences can influence delivery of care.
