Course Overview

The AQA A Level Accounting course offers students a thorough grounding in the principles and practices of accounting. This course is designed to develop students’ understanding of accounting concepts, techniques, and procedures, enabling them to prepare and interpret financial information in a variety of contexts.

Assessment: The AQA A Level Accounting is assessed through two exams at the end of the two-year course:

Paper 1: Financial Accounting

  • Focuses on the principles of financial accounting
  • Includes multiple-choice, short answer, and structured questions

Paper 2: Accounting for Analysis and Decision-Making

  • Focuses on management accounting
  • Includes multiple-choice, short answer, and structured questions

The AQA A Level Accounting course is structured over two years and covers a range of topics that build a strong foundation in both financial and management accounting.

Year 12

Year 1:

1. Introduction to Financial Accounting

  • The role of accounting
  • Types of business organisations
  • Double-entry bookkeeping
  • Trial balance and correction of errors
  • Financial statements of sole traders
  • Adjustments to financial statements (e.g., accruals and prepayments)
  • Final accounts for sole traders

2. Introduction to Management Accounting

  • Introduction to costing
  • Types of costs (fixed, variable, semi-variable)
  • Break-even analysis
  • Budgeting and budgetary control
  • Standard costing and variance analysis 

 

Year 13

Year 2:

3. Financial Accounting

  • Limited companies: share capital, debentures, and reserves
  • Financial statements of limited companies
  • Ratio analysis and interpretation of accounts
  • Cash flow statements
  • The regulatory framework of accounting and ethical considerations

4. Management Accounting

  • Absorption and activity-based costing
  • Marginal costing
  • Capital investment appraisal
  • Decision making: make or buy decisions, limiting factors
  • Budgeting: preparation and control
